Happy New Year everyone!! 🎉 Spent the last of 2 Happy New Year everyone!! 🎉 Spent the last of 2019 getting some good R&R, and now I'm back at it again 😅 There's still so many things to plan for and share from last year, but I'm super excited for 2020!⁠ ⁠ Towards the end of 2019, I was actually pretty burnt out. The day before Christmas, I woke up with a splitting headache, and the pain was so bad, I actually puked 🤮 It persisted for about 4-5 days, and despite all the meds I was taking, it wouldn't go away. Turns out the headaches had a lot to do with the tension in my neck! This was such a great reminder of how important health is. Even if you're not someone who makes resolutions, I believe it's great to set some goals for yourself throughout the year, so you continue to learn and grow. This was the first photo I took on Sam & Aron’s This was the first photo I took on Sam & Aron’s wedding day—an ordinary, undirected moment where they were brushing their teeth side-by-side. They'd just signed their marriage registry & were legally already married by the time I arrived! If you’ve been following me for a while, then you’d know that this is not the type of photo that I would normally share on instagram. For years, I’ve followed this self-imposed rule that all of my posts had to be perfect. Perfect light, expressions, setting, framing… As a result, most of these photos ended up being directed portraits. . Over the past year, I’ve thought a lot about what I can do to serve my clients better, & how I can continue to improve as a photographer. Most wedding photographers these days market themselves as documentary shooters. The truth is, the majority (myself included) do a fair bit of directing to capture these “candid” shots. While I agree, it’s important to create opportunities for beautiful photos, I find myself wanting to pull back & be less of a director and more of an observer. Direction may result in aesthetically beautiful photos, but what do my clients remember when they look at that photo 10, 20 years from now? What does that photo mean to them? . 2020 will mark my 9th year as a wedding photographer. Battling my inner-critic is an on-going struggle, so I’m putting this out into the world: Next year (& for the foreseeable future), I want to challenge myself to capture more of these real moments, where I’m shooting things as they happen, without interfering. I want to stop making excuses about how there’s not enough time, or how the lighting is unflattering, & push myself to look for these moments. For the lack of a better word, I’m hungry for more authenticity, even if the photos aren’t perfectly composed or lit. I want to produce photos that MEAN something. . If you’re one of my 2020 clients & have read my entire spiel; thanks for reading my ramblings! I will definitely continue to direct you when necessary. This is just something I would like to do on top of how I normally shoot. I’m super excited to learn more about who you are, & to capture your wedding day as it unfolds ❤️
